Discourse Markers

In linguistics, a discourse marker is a word or phrase that is relatively syntax-independent, does not have a particular grammatical function, does not change the meaning of the utterance, and has a somewhat empty meaning. Some common ones are umm, you know, I say etc.

My gradpa used to call them fillers when you have a bankruptcy of ideas/words. http://bit.ly/ot7Xa
